How to Get Your Pittsburgh Business Recommended by ChatGPT and AI Search

Atsap Team3 min readOctober 7, 2026

More and more of your customers are skipping the list of blue links. They ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews a question like “Who is a good web developer in Pittsburgh?” and get a short answer that names a few businesses. If your business isn't one of them, you're invisible to a growing share of buyers. The practice of fixing that is called generative engine optimization, or GEO.

What Is GEO, and How Is It Different From SEO?

Traditional SEO helps your pages rank in a list of search results. GEO helps AI assistants understand your business well enough to quote it, summarize it, and recommend it. The two overlap, since AI tools lean on the same public web content search engines do, but GEO rewards a different style of writing: clear, direct, easy to quote.

Answer the Questions Customers Actually Ask

AI assistants look for a sentence they can lift straight into an answer. Think about the real questions a customer would type, then answer each one plainly on your site.

  • What do you do, and who is it for?

  • Where are you located and what area do you serve?

  • How does working with you start, and what happens next?

  • What makes you different from other options?

Put the answer in the first sentence under a heading that matches the question. Skip the vague marketing language. “We build custom software and websites for businesses in Pittsburgh” is far more quotable than “We craft digital experiences.”

Say Where You Are, Every Time It Matters

If you serve Pittsburgh, say Pittsburgh on your service pages, in your page titles, and in your business description. AI tools match location-based questions against the places your site actually mentions. Keep your name, address, and contact details identical everywhere they appear.

Add Structured Data So Machines Can Read Your Site

Structured data (schema markup) is a small block of code that labels your content: this is the business name, this is a service, this is a frequently asked question. It doesn't change how your page looks, but it removes the guesswork for search engines and AI crawlers. Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQ markup are the most useful starting points for a service business.

Let AI Crawlers In

Check that your robots.txt file doesn't block the major AI crawlers, and that you have an up-to-date sitemap. Some businesses also publish an llms.txt file, a plain-text summary of who they are and what they offer, written for AI tools to read. It's quick to create and costs nothing.

Keep Publishing Helpful Content

Fresh, specific articles that answer real questions give AI tools more material to draw from and give you more chances to show up. Write like you talk to customers, stay accurate, and link related pages together so both people and crawlers can find their way around.

Where to Start

You don't need to do everything at once. Start by rewriting your service page openings so each one answers “what is this and who is it for” in a sentence or two, add an FAQ, and confirm your site is crawlable.
